Putignano Carnival: stay 6 km from the parades
The Putignano Carnival is among the oldest in Europe and draws visitors from all over Italy. We are in Castellana Grotte, only 6 km away: a trullo all to yourselves, with a garden and parking, a few minutes from the floats.
A carnival that lasts for weeks
The first records of the Putignano Carnival date back to 1394. Tradition says the festivities start on 26 December, St Stephen's Day, and run until Shrove Tuesday. The most spectacular moments are the parades of giant papier-mâché floats, with masks and music. Dates and programme change every year: always check the official calendar.
On parade days Putignano is very crowded, the town-centre streets are closed to traffic and finding a room or a parking space is hard. Staying in Castellana Grotte, 6 km away, gives you a quiet place with parking and the festival a few minutes by car.

Tips for Carnival
- Book well in advance: on parade days rooms in the area sell out early.
- Check the official Putignano Carnival calendar for parade dates and times.
- The centre is closed to traffic during the parades: arrive early and allow for a walk.
